The theme of the exhibition is stated as follows:

"Looking out into a wilderness, not knowing where you are headed, where we are headed. Artists, if they are to be artists, must go into that wilderness and have conversations, conversations where all involved are changed such that the wilderness is no longer fearful but hopeful; not a place of terror, but one of peace."

Ming Fay Beyond Nature
Ming Fay's Exhibition "Beyond Nature"

Nabi Su Tai Chi student Ming Fay has an art exhibition "Beyond Nature" running now through June 1 at Sapar Contemporary Gallery, 9 North Moore, Street in Tribeca.

From our catastrophic tampering in the Anthropocene to the tension and balance of man and creation through the practice of Tai Chi Chuan, in the exhibition “Beyond Nature” Shanghai-born New York-based artist Ming Fay explores our multivalent relationship to nature. During the 1980s, Fay was a member of Epoxy Art Group, an artist collective with many members from China and Hong Kong who were living in New York's vibrant artist haven of the Lower East Side. Finding inspiration from Asian and Asian American traditions, his work, including large-scale fruits and alien plant forms, is familiar yet surreal, serving as a warning to our assumptions that we are beyond the control of nature.

Opening reception: Thursday, April 18, from 6 to 8 pm
Gallery hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 12 to 6 pm

Daniel Judah Sklar, 1991

Nabi Su Tai Chi student Daniel Judah Sklar currently has two performances at Circle in the Square Theater, on Monday, March 25, Monday, April 1, at 10 am.

Daniel, who for nearly 50 years has been a teacher, director and playwright, is the founder of "Playmaking," a program which teaches children to write and perform in their own plays. Daniel’s program is used in New York City’s public and private schools, and has been taught from Georgia to the South Bronx.

The current play was written by New York City Public School children in Daniel’s most recent “Playmaking” teaching session. Although plays are usually performed by the children themselves, these two events are being performed by adult professional actors.

Daniel’s book "Playmaking," published in 1991, is a step-by-step account of teaching a Playmaking class at New York’s P.S.34. His technique, grounded in solid theatrical tradition, is appropriate for students of any age, in any setting. The book specifically details Daniel's methods which are carefully developed and rigorously tested techniques for kids writing, acting and producing their own plays.

Ray
Ray

Kung Fu Black Belt Ray received special kudos from State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli for "fighting corruption and protecting the public trust."

"Ray Russell works every day to make sure this is at the top of his list as Assistant Chief Investigator. During his long law enforcement career, Ray has investigated many cases where bad actors have stolen funds from state taxpayers. From elected officials to clergymen, Ray has seen how greed can overcome a person's better judgment. 'I'm amazed what people do and how they ruin not only their lives, but those of their families,' he said. 'Our job is to investigate, build a case and make sure the person is held accountable.' Ray is developing a keen understanding of the financial health of private special education schools that receive public aid in New York City. In one recent case, the Division of Investigations, working with auditors from the division of State Government Accountability, teamed up with the Queens District Attorney to prosecute four defendants for gross misuse of funds meant for students at the Island Child Development Center. The multi-year investigation showed millions of dollars were misspent including money used to renovate homes, purchase jewelry and pay for a family wedding. All four defendants plead guilty and were ordered to pay back more than $8 million. Three of the four were sent to jail. 'We worked this case especially hard because of the children,' said Ray. 'In my book, there's nothing worse than stealing from kids.' For his dedication and meticulous attention to detail, Ray is one of the 2,700 proud public servants who make a difference at the Office of the State Comptroller."

Nabi Su Family at Staten Island Yankees

Nabi Su Tai Chi and Kung Fu students with their loved ones came to our July 22, 2017 Nabi Su Family Day at the Staten Island Yankees. We had so much fun!

Master Carolyn's Doob Action Figure

Nabi Su Tai Chi and Kung Fu students, led by Nabi Su Black Belt Maya, had a "Doob" figurine made in honor of Master Carolyn's 70th Birthday. Master Carolyn went to the Doob shop in SoHo, posed for her action figure, then three weeks later the box arrived in the mail. We had an unwrapping ceremony during class to the tune of "Ride of the Valkyries." What fun! This was an idea only Maya could have come up with. Thank you, Maya, for making Master Carolyn's birthday such a special event!

Perfect City
Aaron Landsman's Perfect City group

Please support Nabi Su Black Belt Aaron Landsman's "Perfect City" experimental theater project.

Perfect City is a collective of NYC residents, artists, activists, students and planners, that creates long-term creative strategies to respond to displacement and gentrification. We are a think tank, an arts collective, and we mix activism, urbanism and creativity. We want us all to be able to live together more equitably.

After a year of research and a few performances, we are producing a two-week celebration of our neighborhood at Abrons Arts Center this fall, and we need your support.

The project was started by playwright and Guggenheim Fellow Aaron Landsman, who saw a pattern in the cities and neighborhoods where he lived and worked. Public officials tout their metro areas' "sustainability," pointing to things like farmers' markets, bike lanes and other conveniences that speak to progressive values, but the cities themselves become unaffordable to all but the wealthy.

From our research with urban planners, we learned that city kids don't usually go into the planning fields, and most cities are planned by suburbanites. So we set out to build a project, a movement and a sea change. Cities by city people.

People who grow up in cities are born urban planners. We have to be. We ride public transit from day one; we use creative strategies to navigate invisible and visible boundaries between neighborhoods; we know how to avoid and how to belong. Somehow, though, our needs and our narratives are not at the table when decisions are being made about zoning and planning. So Perfect City is bringing our own chairs, making a new table, whatever it takes

WHAT YOU'RE SUPPORTING: Perfect City's launch includes two weeks of programming at Abrons, in their main gallery, and in the Experimental Theater. Our programming will include guided Urban Observer walking tours, live rock and roll, mapping exercises, and talks with activists, artists and more.

It's week two of our Kickstarter. Can you join the 60 people who've contributed so far? I'm happy to say that, though this is a slightly strange project for crowd source funding, we're already 35% of the way to our goal of $11,000. We would love to raise another $1600 toward our fall launch by the end of the week. Can you contribute today?

Articulate

Tai Chi student David Cohen has curated a group exhibition, "Articulate," opening Sunday, April 9, 2017. The exhibition is on view through May 21.

"This group exhibition, selected by David Cohen, brings together artists working in a striking array of different mediums, genres, styles and milieu, as befits a curator and critic of ecumenical taste who prides himself in looking across lines of fashion and status. In the group he has gathered there is, nonetheless, a common sense of articulation taking the form of visible lines of thought, clarifying elements, or structures that read syntactically. The exhibition will include sculpture (forged metal, assembled wood, assembled found objects), painting, drawing, printmaking, photomontage, photogram and video. Artists draw inspiration from sources as diverse as landscape, computer systems and figure skating, or from gestures or structures rooted in purely abstract visual thinking. The moods vary, too, from the tentative to the declarative, but binding these disparate efforts and varying degrees of organizing principle is a common striving for articulation."

Love Story by Aaron Landsman
"Love Story" by Aaron Landsman

One year ago, Nabi Su's Mary Vaccaro saw one of the best plays in her life, "Love Story" by Nabi Su Black Belt Aaron Landsman. Now is your chance to see it — FOR FREE — this weekend at the Bard's Focus Festival.

The piece is about a misfit you might pass by daily, who walks every street in our city, watching parts of it change, disappear and regenerate. One night in a restaurant, he finds himself wrapped up in the world of a couple and starts following them everywhere for months. "I got so wrapped up in them, I lost track of my walking…"

Mary said that's exactly how she felt after the play. It was indescribable. You must see this!

Pangea (Time, Real and Imaginary...)
"Pangea (Time, Real and Imaginary...)" J. Grabowski

Tai Chi student J. Grabowski had work in a group show "Safe Space," an "Openings" artist collective group exhibition at St. Paul the Apostle that ran through February 22, 2017. "Safe Space" celebrated the first decade of the Openings artist collective. The juxtaposition of art exhibitions with the historical art rich interior of St. Paul the Apostle has consistently motivated deeper public conversations regarding the role of artists and art in the ever changing landscape of society. "Safe Space" continues the effort by "Openings" to foster conversations that have the potential to unite individuals across cultural divides.

"I work in a small studio in Manhattan, but like most New Yorkers my sense of place extends out into daily life. Our neighborhoods and parks, the places we go to eat and shop, the routes we often take, where we stop to rest or talk with friends - all of these 'third places' offer stability, security, and community. They ultimately give rise to ritual and reverie; to a peace of mind. As affordable housing, storefronts and space in general becomes increasingly scarce, and our city moves towards rootless transience, 'safe space' become a meditation on basic sustenance."

Tai Chi student Aaron Grad had a new work commissioned for the 25th Anniversary of the "Mirror Visions Ensemble." It was performed on January 16, 2017 at the Sheen Center in Manhattan. Aaron's piece, "An Invitation to Love" written to text by the poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, was dynamic, percussive and exciting. The performance was beautiful!

Kung Fu student Eva von Schweinitz was the lead artist of a new production of Eugene O'Neill's "The Great God Brown." The play was part of the "Unseen O'Neill" program at the Brick in Brooklyn. Performances ran December 14 through 17, 2016. The directing and acting were astonishing.

J Grabowski Art Show

Tai Chi student J Grabowski had three paintings in the group show "Beauty" at the church of St. Paul the Apostle. The show ran through October 20th, 2016. The opening reception was Thursday, September 15. J's works are beautiful! This expansive group show was in one of New York's most interesting locations. This NYC Landmark church, founded in 1858, houses some of America's greatest religious artwork.

With luminaries such as Theodore Roosevelt as founders, and a treasure trove of painters, writers and musicians as members, this gorgeous complex is a rare treat indeed. The American Academy is only open to the public two months a year, so visit it when you can! The spring show, curated by Souhad, is "Exhibition of Work of Newly Elected Members and Recipients of Honors and Awards." It ran through June 12, 2016, Thursdays through Sundays, from 1 to 4 pm. The Academy is located on Audubon Terrace, west side of Broadway, between 155 & 156 Streets. (Take the #1 Train to 157 Street & Broadway).

Isabelle Milkoff's Collage

Tai Chi student Isabelle Milkoff had three collages on display in "Broad Strokes," an exhibition at Pen and Brush, in May and June, 2016. Isabelle's collages are dynamic jewels. The exhibition featured a diverse selection of works inspired by modernist mechanisms. Featuring 63 works created by 15 artists, the exhibition offered an earnest contemplation of modern art's rich history beyond the exclusionary lens of the accepted canon. As a result, Broad Strokes aimed to incite and encourage deeper considerations and reconsiderations of the role modern art plays for contemporary women artists. Pen and Brush is a woman's gallery with a history that predates suffrage. Their new home at 29 East 22nd Street is a powerful statement of commitment and elegance that is inspirational.

Aaron Landsman Play April 2016

Nabi Su Black Belt Aaron Landsman has written two monologues that were performed in NYC April 20 through April 30, 2016. "Empathy School" was performed by Jim Findlay, and co-created with filmmaker and composer Brent Green. An out-of-work bus driver riffs a layered, immersive story on an overnight ride through rural Illinois. "Love Story," featuring Frank Harts, is about a disappearing city, two people navigating it, and a fidgety, obsessive follower. The two productions will run concurrently at the Abrons Arts Center, 466 Grand Street (at Pitt Street) New York, NY 10002.

Aaron Landsman

Nabi Su Kung Fu students were in a production of "The Sound and The Fury" at the Public in July 2015. The new production featured a performance by Nabi Su Black Belt Aaron Landsman with projections by Nabi Su Brown Belt Eva Von Schweinitz. Obie Award winning ensemble ELEVATOR REPAIR SERVICE returned to The Public, home to its sold-out performances of Gatz (2010 and 2012) and Arguendo (2013), with their widely praised staging of William Faulkner's modernist masterpiece, "The Sound and the Fury." With a lush sound score, high-energy choreography and a profoundly versatile ensemble, ERS delivered a verbatim staging of the novel's opening chapter ("the Benjy chapter"), Faulkner's famous experiment with memory and language. Serving up the tragic demise of Faulkner's Compson family with humor and pathos against a backdrop of an eerily timeless Southern living room, this ensemble of theatrical daredevils, known for their fearless commitment, breathes thrilling new life into another American literary classic.

She's Beautiful When She's Angry

WOMEN'S LIBERATION DOCUMENTARY: "She's Beautiful When She's Angry"

Congratulations to Tai Chi student Kate Taverna on her documentary film "She's Beautiful When She's Angry." After almost 20 years in the making, "She's Beautiful When She's Angry" won the Audience Award at the Boston Independent Film Festival to a standing ovation!

"She's Beautiful" shows how the women's liberation movement flared up like a revolution across the country between 1967 and 1971, with all the stops and starts, radicalism, outrageousness, humor and idealism that revolutionary movements bring out in us all. It takes us from the founding of NOW (National Organization for Women), when ladies wore hats and gloves, to the emergence of more radical factions of women's liberation.

Unbelievable as this may sound, there is NO OTHER theatrically released documentary that records this period of time in the women's liberation movement. You must see it!!!
